‘I preserve moments from the flowing river of time.’ — Carol Lee Mei-kuen
Carol Lee Mei-Kuen works in the mediums of light and time. Her technique of ‘time painting’ originated from the principles of photograms: she places objects onto newsprint papers under the sun; as the paper yellows, the object leaves behind a white trace. The traces left behind record memories, mementos, and spaces of significance for the artist.
This monograph shows the germination of Lee’s creative ideas in early sketches and hand-written notes, alongside reproductions of her later artworks on two ‘invisible’ media between 2005–2010. At its core, Threads of Luminosity is a pictorial journal woven from the threads of light and time, featuring commentary by the artist and essays by scholars Frank Vigneron, Carolyn Cartier, and Pamela Kemper.
